Common questions

Does Hyphælium read my conversations?

No. Hyphælium saves only a breadcrumb — the platform, the page title, the link back, and the opening words of your first message, so you can find the thread again. The rest of the conversation stays on the platform that created it and never passes through us. You can read more in our Privacy Policy.

Which AI platforms are supported?

Seven are built in, and free: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, DeepSeek and Grok. On the paid plan you can also add any other AI platform yourself — see "How do I add another AI platform?" below.

Is it really free to start?

Yes. Signing up needs only an email and a password — no card. Saving breadcrumbs is unlimited, forever, on every plan: no count and no clock. The free plan covers the seven built-in platforms, with up to three pins and two folders. The paid plan — £0.99 a month, with the price locked for three years from the day you join — adds platforms of your own, automatic topic tagging, and unlimited pins and folders. Nothing you save is ever taken away if you stay on the free plan.

Setting up Hyphælium — a step-by-step walkthrough

Hyphælium runs through a free, trusted tool called Tampermonkey. If you've not set something like this up before, don't worry — it's a handful of one-time steps, and this guide walks you through every one. Take it slowly; you only do this once.

Step 1 — Install Tampermonkey

Tampermonkey is a small, free add-on for your browser — think of it as the socket that Hyphælium plugs into. Go to tampermonkey.net — and here's an honest guide to their page, so it doesn't catch you out:

• Near the top is a row of browser names (Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox…). It usually guesses your browser correctly — but glance and check your browser is the one highlighted; click it if not.
• Then scroll down, past a long block of text — and possibly past an advert in a dark box (you don't need anything in it) — until you reach the black bar titled DOWNLOAD.
• There you'll find two boxes side by side: plain "Tampermonkey" (dark icon) and "Tampermonkey BETA" (red icon). Choose the plain one — BETA is a test version for enthusiasts, not for us.
• Click its green "Get from Store" button. Your browser's own store page opens — it looks a little different in each browser, but the job is always the same: one button — "Add" or "Get" — then confirm when asked.

When it's done, you'll see a small Tampermonkey icon (a little monkey face) near the top-right of your browser, by the address bar. That's the socket fitted.

Step 2 — Turn on permission for user scripts (Chrome and Edge)

Recent versions of Chrome and Edge ask you to switch on a setting before Tampermonkey can add scripts. This is the "technical-looking" bit — but it's just two clicks, and you only do it once.

• Click the Tampermonkey icon near the top-right. If it shows a warning or a message about "developer mode" or "allow user scripts", click it — it will take you straight to the right setting.
• You'll land on your browser's Extensions page. Find the switch labelled something like "Developer mode" or "Allow user scripts" (usually top-right of that page) and turn it on.
• That's it — you can close that tab.

The exact wording and position of that switch changes from one browser version to the next, so it may look slightly different from the above — but the idea is always the same: a single on/off setting that lets Tampermonkey do its job. If you're on Firefox, Safari or Opera, you can usually skip this step entirely.

Step 3 — Add Hyphælium

Now the easy part. Click this link:

Tampermonkey will open its own install screen, showing "Hyphælium" and an Install button. Click Install. (If instead you see a plain page of code, or that "can't be added from this website" message, it almost always means Step 1 or Step 2 hasn't finished — go back, check the Tampermonkey icon is there and the permission switch is on, then click the link again.)

Step 4 — Start using it

Open any supported AI platform (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, DeepSeek or Grok — or any platform you've added yourself). You'll see a small green Hyphælium leaf in the bottom-right corner. Click it, sign in once with your Hyphælium email and password, and you're away — every future save is just one click of that leaf.

How do I save a conversation?

When a conversation is worth keeping, click the small green Hyphælium leaf in the corner of the page. It saves a breadcrumb in under a second.

The green button isn't showing — what do I do?

First, make sure you are on one of the supported platforms above. If it still doesn't appear, refresh the page. Then click the Tampermonkey icon near the top-right of your browser and check that Tampermonkey itself is switched on, and that the Hyphælium script inside it is enabled. If it's still hiding after that, email us — see below.

How do I find something I saved?

Open your vault and search by the words you opened with, or narrow things down with the platform, topic and folder buttons above the list. Your vault searches the title and opening words of each breadcrumb — not the whole conversation, which we never keep.

A small habit that makes finding even easier

Because your vault searches the opening words of your first message, you can do future-you a favour: start important conversations with a subject word. Open with "Legal: …", "Recipe idea: …" or "House move: …" and that word travels with the breadcrumb — ready to be searched weeks or months later, when you've forgotten everything else about the thread. It's not a feature you switch on, and there's nothing to set up. Just a habit of the first few keystrokes that pays you back every single time you search.

How do I add another AI platform?

Adding your own platform is part of the paid plan. Right-click the green leaf, choose "+ Add a platform", then give the platform a name and its web address (for example chat.mistral.ai). Reload that site and Hyphælium checks whether it can read your opening words there, and tells you plainly whether it worked. Every AI site is built differently, so this can't be guaranteed on every platform.

The leaf saved a crumb, but the opening words are blank — what now?

That means Hyphælium couldn't read that platform's page automatically. You're not stuck: right-click the leaf and choose "Drop a crumb manually", then type or paste your opening words yourself. Everything else about the crumb — title, platform, link, time — is still captured for you.

What are pins, folders and topic tags?

Pins keep the threads you return to most at the top of your vault — click the small pin on any card. Folders group breadcrumbs into projects — click "+ New folder" among the buttons above your list, then click the "File" tag on a card to put it in a folder. Topic tags (Legal, Code, Research, Planning) are suggested automatically on the paid plan. The free plan includes up to three pins and two folders; the paid plan removes those limits.

Some of my breadcrumbs say "continues — …". What does that mean?

When a new conversation picks up the thread of an earlier one, Hyphælium notices and adds a small note linking them, so a long piece of work stays connected across several chats. It's only a note — you can ignore it. To do this, a short extract of your recent breadcrumbs is analysed, as explained in our Privacy Policy.

How do I delete a breadcrumb?

Click the small ✕ in the top-right corner of its card in your vault and confirm. It's removed straight away and can't be undone. Deleting a breadcrumb doesn't touch the conversation itself, which stays on the AI platform.

How do I upgrade, or manage my subscription?

To upgrade, visit hyphaelium.com and choose to continue for £0.99 a month — your price is then locked for three years from the day you join. Nothing you've already saved changes. You can cancel at any time; your access continues until the end of the period you have paid for, then your account returns to the free plan and everything you've saved stays exactly where it is. If you're on the free plan, there's nothing to cancel — no card was ever taken. To make changes either way, email support@hyphaelium.com.

How do I delete my account and data?
